While you can turn off the read receipts on most social media or messaging apps, it has not been possible on Instagram until now.But, now Instagram has introduced the option to turn off the read receipts. So, if you prefer to keep things low-key, you can turn read receipts off on Instagram.

One can now disable read receipts on Instagram for individual direct messages; here’s how.
- Tap the messenger icon on the top right corner.
- Now, select the direct message in which you want to turn off the read receipts.
- Tap the username on the top bar.
- Then, tap Privacy and safety.
- Toggle off the Read receipts under Who can see your activity.
This will disable the read receipts in the following chat. If you want to disable read receipts in other chats, follow the same steps. Do note that read receipts will remain turned on in vanish mode, even if you turn it off here.
If you want to make your messaging experience more private on Instagram, we suggest you turn off your Activity status. To toggle your Activity Status on or off, follow these steps:
- Tap the “More” button located at the bottom left corner of your Instagram home screen.
- Select “Settings” and then click on “Privacy”.
- Tap on “Activity Status” and uncheck the box next to “Show Activity Status” to disable it.
Enabling Activity Status in Instagram Direct shows a green dot or timestamp next to your profile picture. Disabling it, however, prevents you from viewing the activity status of your followers or anyone you have direct conversations with and vice versa.
